During the time I worked as an ESL teacher at Ban Mai School, I got assigned to teach the English Literature and Culture class for grade 6. I found that it’s important to integrate the lesson content with interactive activities as it will help to increase students’ engagement in my online class.
This is an educational game that I created for my students for them to discover the dining manners in England as part of their cultural lesson. It’s a fun and engaging way for them to recall their knowledge from the previous lessons.
Process
In this project, I also work as a Subject Matter Expert, my goal for this activity is to remind the students of the dining customs that they had learned in their previous lesson. So I summarized the main points that I want to include in the game and planned to turn them into a Quest Challenge. Afterward, I created a storyboard on Google Docs and mapped out the process of the game. Finally, I fully developed the project in Articulate Storyline 360.
Reflection
Finishing this project provided me with several key takeaways:
Gamification: What I put focus on in this project is progressing as it is one of the most vital elements in gamification. The students can visually see their progress as the flag will move to the new location every time they have a correct answer and they can see their points filling the box as well. This makes the challenge much more fun and encouraging to the learners.
Learning Design Principles: In this project, I tend to put my focus to design the game with consistent and intuitive navigation as I don’t want my students to get overwhelmed with the graphics. My navigation buttons are all repetitive and easy to be recognized as they are placed in a similar position throughout the game.
